Motorists are 'heeding' drink-drive warning

A total of 56 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in the first two weeks of Avon and Somerset Police's Christmas campaign.

Operation Tonic has seen more than 12,000 motorists stopped with 874 of those breath-tested.

Ch Insp Polly King said she was happy that drivers seemed to be listening to advice and not drinking.

"During the past eight years the number of those arrested for drink and drug driving has steadily decreased."

She added: "We are pleased that members of the public appear to be heeding our advice."

In 2009, 200 drivers were arrested during the month-long campaign.
