First South African honeymoon 'murderer' to face trial

The Dewanis had been married for just two weeks when attackers struck

One of the three men accused of murdering a woman on her South African honeymoon will stand trial on Tuesday after agreeing a plea bargain.

Taxi driver Zola Tongo, 31, will face trial separately from Xolile Mnguni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25.

All three are accused of murder, robbery and kidnapping.

Anni Dewani, 28, wife of Bristol man Shrien Dewani, was shot dead after Mr Tongo's taxi was hijacked on 13 November in Cape Town.

The pair were travelling through Gugulethu township when attackers struck.

Ms Dewani's expensive wristwatch, a white-gold and diamond bracelet, her handbag and her mobile phone were stolen.

Mr Dewani, 31, from Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol was released unharmed. The couple had been married for two weeks.

Mr Tongo will face an additional count of perverting the course of justice at Western Cape High Court.

Mr Mnguni and Mr Qwabe will appear before Wynberg Regional Court on 25 February before a full trial at Western Cape High Court at a later date.
