Arsonists started a fire at a fast food shop which closed a major road and saw more than 200 guests evacuated from a Birmingham hotel, police said.

Eight fire engines were called to Food Republic in Broad Street at 06:15 BST on Tuesday.

Broad Street was closed going out of the city for several hours and guests at the adjoining Hampton Hilton hotel had to exit the building.

Detectives have been studying CCTV in a bid to find the person responsible.

A West Midlands Police statement said: "Detectives are investigating an arson attack at Food Republic on Broad Street.

"The fire had been set deliberately and caused the evacuation of an adjacent hotel and the closure of Broad Street outward bound for several hours."
