Trapped man rescued from trench in Bearwood

Firefighters rescue man

A rescue operation was launched in Birmingham when a worker became trapped under two tonnes of soil in an 18ft (5.5m) trench.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to Barclay Road, Bearwood, at around 14:20 GMT.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the man, in his 20s, was trapped after one side of the trench collapsed.

He was treated for chest and potential pelvic injuries and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a spokesman said.

Bearwood councillor Bob Piper said a man had been working on land which was being redeveloped in between two houses.
