Footage has been released of a "barbaric" seven-minute attack on a bus passenger in Birmingham.

The 21-year-old victim asked a man and woman to stop the children they were travelling with from throwing sweets at him, West Midlands Police said.

Officers said the couple attacked him and he was squirted in the eyes with a pepper-style spray, suffered a broken nose and 11 other facial injuries.

It happened on the top deck of a bus in the city's Broad Street on 11 January.

'Better kicking angle'

CCTV footage that has just been released shows the male attacker kick and punch the victim, with the woman occasionally joining in.

PC Rob Harper from West Midlands Police described the attack as "barbaric".

"At one stage the attacker stands on a seat to get a better kicking angle," he added.

"What makes this even more shocking is that they unleashed this attack in front of the two children they were travelling with."

Police are appealing for help finding the attackers, who left the number 24 bus with the children at the Green Man in Harborne at about 18:00 GMT.
