Market stalls in Walsall are being moved later to make way for a multimillion-pound redevelopment.

Work on the Old Square Shopping Centre is expected to start in the next few weeks and be completed by summer 2015.

Up to 30 market stalls are being moved to Old Market Square and The Bridge, Walsall Council said.

The authority said it had offered a 25% rent reduction to traders moving to Old Market Square, while the regeneration would be a "huge boost".

Tony Larner, chairman of the Market Traders Association, said: "Obviously, when you move you're concerned about your business and how it's going to perform.

"But, in the long term, when all the work is done it will improve the town and most traders are looking forward to the development being finished and moving back."

Walsall Council is providing £8m to fund the first phase of the scheme, which is expected to see 150 jobs created.
