Woman charged with murder of man killed in house fire

A woman has been charged with murder after a man died in a house fire on Christmas Day.

The 58-year-old victim died from smoke inhalation in the blaze at the property on South Street Gardens, in Caldmore, Walsall, late on Wednesday afternoon.

West Midlands Police said unemployed Susan Buckley, 57, was charged on Saturday evening. She will appear before Walsall magistrates on Monday.

The victim has not yet been formally identified, officers said.

    It was an amazing day at the Commonwealth Games yesterday. Competitors from Birmingham and the Black Country grabbed three golds, one silver and a bronze for Team England.

    The first gold of the games was picked up by Jodie Stimpson, from Oldbury, in the Triathlon.

    Last night Nekoda Davis, who trains at the University of Wolverhampton's Walsall campus, won the judo in the 57kg class. Helen Scott, from Halesowen, was the pilot for Sophie Thornhill in the B2 tandem cycling, who took gold.

    Child poverty in Birmingham 09:23: Midlands Today

    A report for the Labour Party claims nearly a third of children in Birmingham are living in poverty.

    The research raises concerns that as a result more young people are self harming, with a 20% increase in cases in the past year.

    The report, commissioned by MP Liam Byrne and Councillor John Cotton, calls for a new Child Poverty Commission to support parents.

    A boy with a form of dwarfism says he has been barred from Birmingham buses five times in a fortnight in a row over his bike.

    Kain Francis, 17, from Kingstanding, says the bike is a "lifeline" to a social life as he does not have much stamina to walk.

    Kain, who is 3ft 5in (1.04m) tall, says one driver asked him for proof he was disabled.

    Two youths were arrested after a fight broke out at Oaklands Recreation Ground in Yardley yesterday afternoon, West Midlands Police says.

    It's the same park where Hassan Mahmood, 15, died after being stabbed in the back during a fight last July.

    A 34-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman's body was discovered in a burning car in Erdington earlier this week.

    Damian Dinobewei, of Erdington, is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court later today.
