Man arrested after baby rescued from fire in Tividale

A man has been arrested after a mother and her baby were rescued from a fire.

The 18-year-old woman and her three-month-old child were rescued by firefighters from the flat fire above a shop in Elm Terrace, Tividale, near Oldbury, at about 04:00 BST.

The pair were not injured but the baby was taken to hospital as a precaution.

West Midlands Police officers believe the fire was started deliberately and arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

He will be questioned by detectives later.

Insp Pete Rowe, from West Bromwich Police, said: "This was a serious incident that could have had really tragic consequences.

"Fortunately the fire service were contacted in time and were able to safely evacuate the occupants and extinguish the fire before anyone was hurt."
