A man has been jailed for seven years for stabbing a teenage student metres away from a Birmingham college.

Police said Valentine Cannings, 22, stabbed the unidentified student outside Bournville College in Longbridge Lane on 12 October because he had given him "dodgy looks".

At Birmingham Crown Court Cannings, of Longfield Road, Northfield, admitted wounding and possessing the knife.

The student, who spent five days in intensive care, has since recovered.

Police said the attack happened in front of "horrified students" and said "crystal clear" CCTV pictures had shown Cannings with the knife.

Cannings was caught near a stream off Leybrook Road, after having dumped the knife and his gloves and baseball cap.

Det Con Paul Read, of West Midlands Police, said it had been an "unprovoked attack on a young lad who miraculously survived his very serious injury".
