Sutton Coldfield's Desmond Darcy harassed Commons clerk

A man has been given an 18-month supervision order for harassing a House of Commons clerk.

Desmond Darcy, 61, of Sutton Coldfield, made abusive calls after seeking help from Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell over a financial complaint, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Darcy, of Manor Road, pleaded guilty to putting a person in fear of violence.

He was given a restraining order preventing him from contacting clerk Michael Hennessey, the CPS said.

It added Darcy, who received the order at Birmingham Crown Court, sought help from the Sutton Coldfield MP "with regards to an ongoing complaint which he had lodged with the Financial Ombudsman".

'Threatening letter'

Zafar Siddique, West Midlands CPS Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor said: "Mr Mitchell, who had assisted him as much as he could, had eventually concluded that he could not assist him any further and that the Financial Ombudsman had dealt with his original complaint.

"Darcy took exception to this and proceeded in making a series of offensive telephone calls to Mr Mitchell's constituency office.

"He then made further abusive telephone calls and sent a threatening letter to Mr Michael Hennessey, Commons Clerk to the Joint Committee on Human Rights for the House of Commons."

The CPS said Mr Mitchell provided the Crown with a statement clarifying that he did not wish to pursue this matter as he did not feel that he was put in fear of any violence.
