Birmingham riots charge 18 months on

A 20-year-old man from Birmingham has been charged by police investigating riots in the city in August 2011.

West Midlands Police said they had now arrested almost 800 people in connection with disorder in Birmingham and the Black Country.

The arrest on Tuesday followed analysis of CCTV footage from 9 August 2011.

The man has been charged with one count of burglary and one of attempted burglary. He is due to appear before magistrates in Birmingham later.

The 20-year-old, arrested after a raid in Sparkhill, is suspected of trying to break in to Birmingham jeweller Watches of Switzerland and an attack on a newsagent in Newhall Street on the same evening.

Sgt Julie Woods said West Midlands Police were still actively trying to track down people suspected of taking part in the riots 18 months ago.
