M6 closes overnight outside Birmingham

A section of the M6 motorway is due to shut later in the first of a series of weekend closures to replace gantries.

Both carriageways between junctions five and seven are expected to close from 22:00 GMT to 08:00 GMT on Friday and Saturday.

The Highways Agency said diversions would be in place.

Other closures are due to see carriageways shut every weekend until 23 March, affecting the M6 between junctions five and 10.

The work is part of a £105m project to upgrade technology, designed to improve congestion.

The Managed Motorway Scheme has already seen hard shoulders opened up to traffic and the introduction of variable speed limits on the M6.

Rob Edwards, from the Highways Agency, said closures were necessary to complete the work as quickly as possible and ensure the safety of drivers, with contractors working overhead with heavy equipment.

The agency said roadworks on the M5/M6 link road on Monday morning between junctions eight and seven of the M6 were also expected to affect traffic.
