A charity football match has been held between Aston Villa fans and ex-players in support of the club's captain who has leukaemia.

A minute's applause was held during the match for Stiliyan Petrov, who was able to attend the game in Halesowen after being diagnosed in March.

The club said in August he was now in remission.

A group of fans bid £1,000 in a charity auction to play in the game against the Aston Villa Lions and Legends.

The fans' team, called Petrov's XI, won the match 7-6.

Among the 2,000-strong crowd were former Villa players Gareth Barry and Ashley Young.

The organisers of the match had hoped to raise more money during the match for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
