Driver injured in Birmingham crash: IPCC informed

A man has sustained serious injuries in a car crash in Birmingham city centre.

A number of roads were closed near to where the incident occurred on Bristol Street shortly after 03:00 GMT.

West Midlands Police said an Audi hit parked cars and street furniture. It is trying to establish if it is linked to a police car being in the area.

The driver of the Audi, in his 30s, was taken to hospital. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said these types of incidents were routinely referred to the commission, which will consider whether to independently investigate.

Bristol Street has been closed, along with the pagoda island at Horsefair, Thorpe Street, Suffolk Street Queensway and parts of Hurst Street, the spokesperson added.

The roads are expected to reopen later this morning.
