Wolverhampton pensioner murder inquiry: Reward offered

A reward of £5,000 has been offered to help trace burglars who conned their way into the Wolverhampton home of a former headmistress.

Police started a murder inquiry after the death of 90-year-old Hester Mottershead shortly after the incident in Saxonfields, Tettenhall, on Friday.

Three men conned their way inside and searched her home for valuables.

Shortly after they left, Ms Mottershead collapsed and was taken to hospital where she died on Saturday.

Police said the results of a post-mortem examination proved inconclusive and further tests would be carried out over the coming weeks to establish the cause of death.

'Piece together'

The charity Crimestoppers has now offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.

Det Ch Insp Caroline Marsh, from West Midlands Police, said: "This is a tragic and very upsetting case for all those who knew Hester, as well as the wider Tettenhall community.

"Our investigation is still in the early stages, and we are keen to hear from anyone in the area who can help us piece together the events leading up to, and following, the burglary and Hester's death."

Police said Ms Mottershead was a former head teacher at both Bilston Girls High School and Wolverhampton Girls High School.
