Walsall town centre partially closed after fire at Boak

Post fire at BOAK building, Walsall Crews put out the fire at the former Boak building early on Tuesday

Part of Walsall town centre remains closed off because of a fire at a six-storey former leather factory.

More than 80 firefighters were called to the blaze at the old Boak building on Station Street in Walsall late on Monday night.

West Midlands Police said a number of roads are expected to be closed for the rest of the day and access to Walsall railway station has been restricted.

Officers are treating the fire as suspicious.

The fire was put out at about 05:00 BST but the roof has collapsed and parts of the Grade II-listed building are still unsafe, police said.

Bridgeman Street has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians between the rail over-bridge and the junction with Queen Street.

There will be no access to Station Street from Bridgeman Street, and Navigation Street at the junction of Frederick Street is closed.

Long Street has reopened after being closed between Bridgeman Street and Brook Street.

People needing to access the railway station entrance are asked to do so via Park Street.
