Man 'leaps' off Bullring balcony in Birmingham

Crowds outside the centre Shoppers were asked to leave to centre after the incident

A man has been taken to hospital after leaping off a balcony in Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre, say police.

The centre was evacuated following the incident at about 19:20 BST.

Police said the man jumped from the third floor inside the centre near the Debenhams store. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

CCTV footage showed him "leaping over a barrier" and officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

A spokeswoman for the shopping centre said: "We can confirm that there was an incident at 7.20pm this evening at Bullring. As a result of this we have evacuated an area of the centre.

"We are working closely with West Midlands Police and as always our primary concern is for the welfare of our customers."

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the man suffered numerous injuries.

The shopping centre is usually open until 20:00 BST on Friday.
