A performance designed to launch the London 2012 Festival in Birmingham set sail after previously being halted by the weather.

Heavy rain forced the organisers of The Voyage to cancel Thursday's opening performance in Victoria Square.

But Friday's performance went ahead with organisers estimating 4,500 people turned up to see the free show.

The final two performances on Saturday or Sunday are also expected to go ahead.

The Voyage, organised by the Birmingham Hippodrome and created by Warwickshire dancers Motionhouse with Australian theatre company Legs on the Wall, is one of several shows taking place across the UK to launch the London 2012 Festival.

The performance also features 140 people from West Midlands' dancing groups, musicians from the Birmingham Conservatoire and a gospel choir.
