A post-mortem examination on the body of man found in a burnt out car in Birmingham scrapyard has confirmed he died as the result of a fire.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was found after emergency services were alerted to a car fire at a salvage yard at 23:54 BST on Tuesday.

The yard, on Gravelly Lane in Erdington, remains sealed off.

Police said the death was being treated as "unexplained" while investigators determine how the fire started.

Firefighters were called after reports that several cars were on fire.

The fire is believed to have spread from one vehicle to two others.

Det Insp Buck Rogers, from West Midlands CID, said: "We await the results of further tests to determine how this man came to be in the vehicle and ultimately suffered fatal injuries.

"He is yet to be identified and as such we are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and speak to us at their earliest opportunity."

Police have been speaking to local residents and conducting inquiries at the scene.
