Tolkien relation sculpts Cardinal Newman statue

The great-nephew of author JRR Tolkien has made a statue of Cardinal John Henry Newman for the Pope's visit to Birmingham.

Artist Tim Tolkien said Pope Benedict XVI would bless the statue when he performs the cardinal's beatification in Cofton Park on 19 September.

He said it was apt he made the statue as his great uncle attended the Birmingham Oratory, founded by Newman.

He was then taught by Brother Francis Morgan, Cardinal Newman's protege.

The Pope is due to beatify the cardinal during a special Mass in Cofton Park.
