National Grid fined for Bracknell gas work delays

Twin Bridges Roundabout sign, Bracknell National Grid has diverted the gas main at the roundabout in Bracknell

A utility company is being fined for over-running on roadworks that have caused long delays for motorists in Berkshire.

National Grid has been diverting the gas main at the Twin Bridges Roundabout in Bracknell and should have finished work last week.

Bracknell Forest Council is fining the company £5,000 for every day it over-runs.

National Grid said the work would be finished later.

The company has apologised for the long delays it has caused motorists.

It described the work as "very complex" and added its engineers had been working 12 hour shifts, seven days a week, in an attempt to get the job finished.

The council described the situation as "frustrating".

The road is expected to reopen by Thursday morning.
