Man hunted after armed raid on Tesco Express

An armed robber was thwarted by a passer-by after he robbed a supermarket in Berkshire.

Just before 07:30 GMT on Monday, a man entered the Tesco Express store in Reading Road, Burghfield Common.

Armed with a handgun, he demanded money from the staff and took an undisclosed quantity of cash.

As the man left the shop, a passer-by tried to stop him, but he fled on foot after dropping the handgun and cash in a plastic bag.

No-one is believed to have been hurt in the raid.

Det Con Daniel Bowles said: "I would commend the bravery shown by the member of the public.

"However, Thames Valley Police would not advise members of the public to put themselves in danger by approaching offenders."

Anyone with information about the robbery has been asked to contact Thames Valley Police.
