A major route in Reading has re-opened in time for the afternoon rush hour following work to repair a collapsed sewer.

A partial closure of the inner distribution road (IDR) came into force on Friday night for emergency repairs.

It was hoped they would be be completed by Monday morning.

However, road re-surfacing problems led to traffic jams on the northbound carriageway.

The collapsed sewer, in Caversham Road near Drews the Ironmongers, was still carrying waste but had caused a dip in the road.

The work was needed to make the road safe, Thames Water said.
