A contract has been awarded to build a new full-time fire station in Berkshire.

Windsor will see a new station built in Tinkers Lane after councillors agreed to release £300,000 of capital funding.

The remaining £100,000 will come from a government grant to the fire service. A dedicated Windsor crew will provide 24-hour cover for the town.

Wernicks Ltd will build the station which, subject to planning permission, is set to open within the next year.

The station will be provided to the fire service on a 125-year rent-free lease.

The current St Mark's Road station has been crewed during daylight hours only by the Windsor crew since October 2011 when a 24-hour station opened in Wokingham.

Crews from Slough currently staff Windsor station at night.
