Newbury's Mercure Hotel evacuated after basement fire

A hotel in Berkshire has been evacuated after a fire in the basement.

About 20 firefighters were called to the Mercure Elcot Park Hotel in Bath Road, Newbury, at 03:30 GMT.

Crews from Hungerford, Newbury and three appliances from Reading attended, remaining on site to help with damping down until 14:00 GMT.

The fire started in an area containing paper products. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has begun an investigation into its cause.

The hotel management confirmed 57 of its 73 rooms were occupied at the time of the fire with about 70 guests evacuated.
