Reading car park death: IPCC examines statements

Statements by two police officers made about the death of a man who fell from a multi-storey car park are being examined by the police watchdog.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating an incident from May 2011 in which Stephen Church, 53, died.

British Transport Police (BTP) detained him under the Mental Health Act when he was seen on train tracks in Reading.

He was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital with an injured hand but fled.

Mr Church was first detained by the two officers on tracks near Little John's Lane in Reading. A short time after leaving hospital he fell from a nearby car park.

The IPCC has investigated how Mr Church was dealt with by the officers at the hospital, and how he managed to leave while they were present.

But an inquest due to take place in February has been put back by the coroner following the submission of new information from the BTP to the police watchdog.

The IPCC said it was also examining contact between the British Transport Police Federation and the officers involved.
