Two people killed in a crash on the M4 motorway in Berkshire - in which one car is thought to have been going the wrong way - have been named.

Cyril Titcombe, 82, and Tony Gwillym, 48, collided on the eastbound carriageway between the Chieveley and Hungerford junctions on 7 July.

They were both from Swindon. An elderly woman passenger was also injured.

Police are investigating whether one of the cars was travelling in the wrong direction, against the flow of traffic.

999 call

An inquest into the deaths has been opened and adjourned.

Mr Titcombe, who was driving a Mazda, died at the scene and Mr Gwillym, who was driving a Volkswagen Passat, died later in hospital.

The elderly passenger was travelling in the Mazda with Mr Titcombe. She suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital in Oxford.

Police confirmed a 999 call was received about a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction against the flow of the eastbound traffic, shortly before the crash happened.

They have appealed for witnesses.
