Abandoned baby girl found in bag on Reading doorstep

The holdall The baby was inside a holdall, but was said to be well cared for

A baby has been found on a Reading doorstep, with a note in Polish saying she is called Amelia.

The two to three-week-old girl was found inside a holdall in London Road late on Thursday evening by a priest.

The child's mother said in her note she could not provide a decent life for her little daughter.

Amelia was found opposite the town's Polish centre just before 21:00 BST. She is now being cared for at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Father Jerzy Januszkiewicz, from the Polish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, found the infant.

He said: "The mother asked in the note that if possible could the baby be brought up by a Polish family.

"I'm sorry for the mother because the baby was very well cared for and was clean and well, but the mother said in her note she was unable to provide the baby with a decent life."

Mother's welfare

Thames Valley Police also said Amelia appeared to be unharmed with no immediate evidence of injuries or trauma.

Officers have expressed their concern for the mother's welfare.

Supt Stuart Greenfield said: "We believe that the baby was left on the doorstep sometime between 19:30 and 21:00 BST.

"We're particularly keen to hear from anyone in the community who may have information relating to the baby or her mother."
