Milton Keynes explosion injures pensioner

Cordon in Gairloch Avenue A cordon was set up around the site of the explosion in Gairloch Avenue

An elderly woman is in hospital after being injured in an explosion at a house in Milton Keynes, police said.

About 60 homes were evacuated after the blast in Gairloch Avenue on the Lakes Estates in Bletchley at about 17:20 GMT on Tuesday.

Buckinghamshire Fire Service said there had not been a fire but officers remained at the site overnight due to the risk of a blaze.

The cause is not yet known but a gas leak has been isolated by engineers.

About 100 residents were taken to the Sycamore Hall in Drayton Road and were looked after by Red Cross volunteers.

They are being allowed back to their homes in a "phased return" after each property is given a gas safety check, the fire service said.

Southern Gas Networks confirmed the site was now "safe and secure" and an investigation was under way.

"Until these investigations have been undertaken, it is too early to speculate as to what has happened," a statement read.
