Arlesey fire: Mother and children rescued from house

A mother and her three children have been rescued after becoming trapped upstairs by a fire at their home.

A member of the public and police officers have been praised for their "selfless bravery" in saving the family in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, at 00:30 GMT.

The officers arrived before firefighters and found the children had been lowered from an upstairs window to a member of the public below.

They broke into the house on Cluny Way and put out the fire in the kitchen.

The woman was able to escape unharmed. Her children were also unhurt.

Insp Jim Goldsmith, of Bedfordshire Police, said: "This was a selfless act by the officers and the member of the public who also came to this family's rescue.

"The fire service were just minutes away but the officers thought nothing of breaking in and putting out the blaze with no thought to their own safety.

"It doesn't bear thinking about what might have happened had they not acted so bravely."

Both police officers suffered the effects of smoke inhalation, but did not require treatment.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.
