Woman dies in A1(M) accident in Hertfordshire

A woman has died and a man left with "serious injuries" following a crash on the southbound A1(M) in Hertfordshire.

The pair were in a Vauxhall Astra which collided with a Land Rover Discovery and hit the central reservation, near junction 3 at Hatfield, police said.

They were taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, where the woman later died.

The crash happened just after 18:00 GMT on Wednesday. The road was closed from junction 4 until shortly after 21:30.

Police have appealed for witnesses. A spokesman said the reason for the crash was currently "unknown".
