Luton gunshots 'not linked' to wider gun crime investigations

Gunshots heard in Luton on Wednesday night are not being linked to wider gun crime investigations, police have said.

The incident was reported in the Little Church Road and Hallwicks Road area - about a mile from the town centre.

Witnesses have described hearing gunshots and seeing a number of men chasing each other before making off on foot and in a vehicle.

Police are dealing with the incident separately and have asked for more witnesses to contact them.

Det Insp Iain Morgan said: "We have already obtained a number of reports from witnesses about the incident but the picture is still confusing in terms of the number of people involved and the vehicles they were using."

Bedfordshire Police conducted on a crackdown on gun crime which has so far this year seen 64 people arrested, 27 firearms recovered and 231 stop-checks carried out in the town.

Four people have been charged with firearm or weapon offences and are expected to appear in court later this year.

A further 12 people are currently on bail for similar offences.
