Appspond Lane blaze: Fire crews still visit

Fire crews are still visiting a wood recycling plant in Hertfordshire, more than two months after a blaze at the site.

The fire at Wood Recycling Services (WRS) in Potters Crouch, which began last November, is still smouldering.

A crew still visits the Appspond Lane site once a day to check if it needs dampening, the fire service said.

A spokesman commented: "The worst is out but the smouldering pile will still take some time to deal with."

Firefighters were called on 10 November to the site, near junction 8 of the M1, to tackle a blaze in what was described as being a 20ft (6m) high pile of timber.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said it attended 24 hours a day until 26 November, during which time, 172 engines visited the site.

Smoke from the fire caused roads in the area to be closed into the following week.

District Commander Ian Markwell could not say how long it would take to finally extinguish, but hoped that "probably within the next week or two", it could "really dampen down the worst of what's there".

He added that a fire investigation had concluded the blaze was probably caused by accident.

The Environment Agency served an enforcement notice on the owners before the fire to restrict the levels of wood being brought onto the site.

It is carrying out its own investigation and cannot comment further until this is complete.
