A ward at a Hertfordshire hospital is to get a £1m makeover, following approval from its trust's board.
The transformation will see ward 7A at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage become its inpatient gynaecology ward from December 2012.
The 29-bed unit will also house an early pregnancy unit, gynaecology emergency unit and outpatient services.
East and North Herts NHS Trust said it hoped to create one of the "most modern" services in the region.
Consultant gynaecologist Alasdair Drake said: "Our aim is to create one of the best services available anywhere in the east of England, which we know will help us recruit and retain highly experienced staff to help us realise that ambition."
Refurbishment work on ward 7A is due to start in July 2012 and the service should be able to move from its current temporary home on ward 11A by mid-December.
