A chaplain arrested on suspicion of a historical sexual offence will not face charges, police have said.

The Reverend Philip Bentham, from Bishop Auckland, had been on bail since May after being arrested by Merseyside Police on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 58-year-old churchman was suspended from his job as chaplain at Durham School while the police inquiry took place.

The allegation did not relate to the school.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "No further action is to be taken against chaplain of Durham School, Rev Philip John Bentham.

"He was arrested in May on suspicion of a historical sexual offence in the Merseyside area and was due to answer bail.

"Merseyside Police has now said he faces no further action."
