Train derailment in Crewe causes delays

Rail track Lior Abel, who was stuck between Crewe and Stafford, tweeted a photo

A derailed freight train at Crewe has caused overhead wire problems, resulting in delays to trains.

There have been delays of up to 70 minutes to all trains through the station following the derailment, which happened at about 18:30 BST.

All routes through Crewe were affected, National Rail Enquiries said.

Services operated by Arriva Trains Wales, Cross Country, East Midlands Trains, London Midland, Northern Rail and Virgin Trains have been delayed.

National Rail Enquiries said all lines through Crewe had reopened, but passengers might still be delayed while services returned to normal.

Frank Keogh, from BBC Sport, who was on a train from Manchester to London that had been halted outside Crewe, said his Virgin train was sent back up north to Stockport.

'Surprisingly calm'

Mr Keogh was going to watch England's World Cup game in Milton Keynes.

He said: "It's unfortunate for me as I was going to meet an old friend to watch the football which I'm not going to see now.

"I'm thankful that it seems nobody's been hurt in the derailment. It's frustrating because it's such a big game."

Penny Gill ‏tweeted: "#crewe Another night out ruined because of train delays and a really grumpy husband! So fed up! How long will delay be?!!!"

IT worker Lior Abel, who was stuck between Crewe and Stafford, said his Cross Country train was stopped for just over an hour.

He said: "My dogs are waiting at home so I'm anxiously waiting to go back to them. They've been there all day.

"[People here are] anxious to get home but surprisingly calm."
