A flood-damaged road that runs between Oxfordshire and Berkshire will reopen fully "before next winter".

The B478 Playhatch Road leads to one of three bridges over the River Thames in the area and links Sonning to Reading.

Oxfordshire County Councillor David Nimmo Smith said he understood "the frustration" people have had with closures and traffic restrictions.

The road will be closed again for more investigation work on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June.

The road, which closed for about six weeks earlier this year due to flooding, carries an estimated 16,000 cars on weekdays.

It is currently partially closed.

When fully closed, it causes severe traffic delays as drivers are all diverted to Reading Bridge and Caversham Bridge to cross the River Thames.

Oxfordshire County Council said engineers planned to reinstate the washed-away embankment to its original shape and height.

Resurfacing and reconstruction of the road will also take place.

Dates for the work is set to be over the summer and autumn.
