Barriers installed to block flooded Playhatch Road

Barriers have been placed across a flooded road by highways officers after drivers ignored closure signs.

Playhatch Road, which leads to the Sonning Bridge over the River Thames between Oxfordshire and Berkshire, has been closed for most of the year.

Oxfordshire County Council cannot confirm when the B478 will reopen. Residents have access, but have to avoid the flooded section.

The parish council claims some have been unable to leave their homes.

Councillor David Nimmo Smith, cabinet member for transport at Oxfordshire County Council, said: "Now that water levels have dropped, we can see there is damage to the side of the road and it's starting to undermine the road as well.

"We're going to wait until the levels drop a bit further so we can get in and do a full investigation."

The B478 through Sonning is a major route between Henley-on-Thames and Reading.
