TV weather presenter Fred Talbot has appeared in court charged with the sexual abuse of schoolchildren between 1968 and 1983.

The 64-year-old former teacher is accused of nine offences of indecent assault and one serious sexual assault against five alleged victims.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court, Mr Talbot spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

He will next appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on 4 March.

Six counts of indecent assault relate to one alleged victim at Elgin High in Newcastle where Mr Talbot previously taught, police said.

The other offences relate to four alleged victims from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, where he also taught.

Mr Talbot, from Bowdon, Greater Manchester, is best known for his work on the ITV programme This Morning in the late 1980s and 1990s when it was hosted by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan.
