David Irving cycle crash death: Visibility 'was good'
Visibility before a fatal crash in which a cyclist was allegedly knocked off his bike by a van's wing mirror was "very good", a court has heard.
David Irving, 48, from Wimborne, Dorset, was cycling in Southampton when the collision happened on 17 December 2012. He died at the scene.
Steven Petterson, 38, who denies causing his death, told police his vision was restricted by the low sun.
Sgt Rob Heard told jurors visibility on the morning was "very good".
He added conditions were "clear, sun out with a little bit of cloud".'Hit bus signpost'
Southampton Crown Court also heard from a police forensic vehicle examiner that another vehicle in the vicinity of the crash was examined.
The Mercedes had "considerable damage" to its underside, including torn fabric and signs of impact with a human body, it was heard.
Colin Norris said the front number plate of the car had "two impact marks" and there were also "scraping" and "scuff" marks.
"There was damage to a few mechanical components. The radiator mounting was knocked backwards and the radiator was leaking coolant," he added.
A post-mortem examination showed Mr Irving, who was cycling in Mountbatten Way, suffered a head injury consistent with being hit by a wing mirror.
He also suffered injuries to his body, including 38 fractures to his ribs, caused by him being run over, the court has heard.
On Monday, the court heard that Mr Petterson, of Waterhouse Lane, Southampton, thought he "had hit a bus signpost" while driving a Ford Transit minibus.
He denies causing Mr Irvine's death by driving without due care and attention.
The trial continues.
