Man dies in hospital after assault near Chester pub

Northgate Street, Chester Police said the man was attacked close to the Liverpool Arms on Northgate Street

A man has died in hospital after he was assaulted near a Chester pub, police have said.

Officers were called to Northgate Street at about 00:50 GMT on Saturday after receiving reports of an assault close to the Liverpool Arms.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said the 63-year-old, from Northumberland, had been taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital, but died two days later.

She said a post-mortem examination would be carried out on Tuesday.

Two men, both aged 26, were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of assault.

The pair, from Ellesmere Port, have been released on bail pending further inquires.

The man's family has been informed but he has not been identified by police.

The spokeswoman said he had been in the Liverpool Arms and was attacked after leaving the premises.

She added that it was believed his attackers had also been in the bar during the evening.

Cheshire Police's Sgt Andrew Burrage said it was "too early to speculate on a motive for this attack".
