Sick children get new hospital suite

11 November 2013 Last updated at 23:33 GMT

Work has begun on a new "home from home" for patients' families at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Two charities - the Children's Heart Unit Fund and The Sick Children's Trust - have raised almost £2m to build the facility.

It will have 18 en-suite rooms, and is designed to help families who have had to make the hospital their home while a child is being treated.

Former Newcastle United player and manager, Alan Shearer, was guest of honour as work got under way. Look North's Sharon Barbour reports.
