Environment Agency staff have been stunning fish with an electric current to help them count the numbers in the Upper Medway on the Kent and East Sussex border.
Eight different species were counted in the 300ft (100m) catch zone, with 125 fish being gathered and returned to the water.
Biodiversity Officer Tom Reid said the survey showed work being done to improve the health of the river was increasing the numbers of fish.
