A lawyer who was being probed over fraud allegations died of stab wounds to the chest, an inquest has heard.

Married father-of-two Peter Maine, 56, from Wynyard, Stockton, was found in his running kit near Maiden Castle Sports Centre, Durham, on 1 September.

Opening an inquest in Crook, County Durham, coroner Andrew Tweddle said a post-mortem examination revealed he died of stab wounds.

The hearing was adjourned until November.

Durham Police said Mr Maine, who had been out for a morning run, was being investigated by them in connection with fraud allegations.
