Durham and Darlington fire service confirms HQ move

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service will move into a new headquarters next month, it has confirmed.

Staff will be based in the axed regional control centre's building at Belmont Business Park, Durham City.

The premises was set to be part of a national network of nine control centres linked by a computer system, before the plan was scrapped in 2010.

About £482m was spent on the nationwide scheme before it was aborted.

Councillor Michele Hodgson, chair of the area's fire authority, said government funding had been used to adapt the building.

The service said its current base, at Framwellgate Moor, "came to the end of its useful life some ten years ago" and had "soaring" utility costs.

Staff will begin to move from 2 September.
