A prisoner who escaped to Poland has been found dead in his cell ahead of a court appearance to extradite him.

Ian McLean, 44, also known as Ian Mitchell, went missing from the mental health unit at Littlemore Hospital in Oxford last month.

It is thought he travelled through Brussels and Berlin before he was arrested in Kolobrzeg on 15 July.

McLean, who was jailed for life in 2004 for attacking his former girlfriend, was found hanged in his cell.

Oxford Health said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding his escape.

A spokesman added: "We have written to his family to offer our condolences."
