Police have named and released a photo of a missing prisoner they want to speak to about an armed robbery at a building society last month.

Martin Dawson, 49, absconded from HMP Sudbury, Derbyshire, on 24 June, where he was serving a life sentence, West Mercia Police said.

He is described as a "person of interest" after the robbery in Telford, Shropshire, on 29 June.

A cashier was forced to give cash to a man who appeared to be holding a gun.

Dawson was serving a life sentence at the time of his escape from Sudbury after being sentenced in 2000 for robberies, possession of a firearm and attempted escape from lawful custody.

No-one was hurt and CCTV footage of the robbery, which happened at the Britannia Bank on the High Street, was released earlier in July.

It shows the cashier put the money into a carrier bag provided by the man who then walked out.

Crimewatch appeal

Det Sgt Dafydd Jones, from West Mercia Police, said: "We have issued several witness appeals, including one on the BBC Crimewatch programme.

"As a result, a number of people have come forward with information and we have released the name of Martin Dawson as a person who is of interest to us and may be able to assist the investigation."

Police believe Dawson - described as white, 5ft 7in tall, of slim build, with short brown hair and grey eyes - is in the Staffordshire or Derbyshire area.

His last home address was in Stafford, police said.
