Police have warned boat owners to take precautions against rising marine crime in Devon and Cornwall.

Devon and Cornwall Police said thefts were up 60% since 2009.

The force said it was working with the RNLI and other agencies in Mevagissey in Cornwall giving advice to boat owners and making safety checks.

Marine crime has ranged from the theft of shackles from a dinghy to a £10,000 outboard motor being stolen.

PC Jay Dorman said: "It's as devastating for the family who lose their little sailing dinghy which they love taking out as it is for someone who loses an expensive outboard from their £30,000 power boat.

"So it is everyone that we are appealing to."

Police will be offering crime prevention advice to boat owners as well as promoting the Boat Watch scheme which is based on the same principles as Neighbourhood Watch.
