RAF base workers in England and Wales vote to strike

Chefs, cleaners and other civilian staff at eight RAF bases have voted to go on strike in a row over pay.

The GMB and Unite unions said their members, employed by ISS, rejected an "insulting" eight pence per hour rise.

The affected sites are Valley, Llanrwst and Fairbourne in north Wales, Cranwell, Scampton, and Kirton in Lincolnshire, and Shawbury and Cosford in Shropshire.

The unions said dates for strike action had not yet been set.

Unite national officer Mike McCartney said: "Both GMB and Unite want to sit down with ISS and revisit these talks with the hope of a positive outcome.

"However, we now have a mandate from our members for action.

"If ISS are not prepared to talk, then we will use that mandate."

The unions have 240 members employed by contractor ISS across the eight bases.
