New routes to 15 destinations - including Dubrovnik, Menorca, Poznan and Malta - are expected to lead to a rise in passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport.

The airport said current trends led them to expect 2.9 million passengers this summer, 200,000 more than last summer.

A 1.5% rise in passengers was seen during the first May Bank Holiday.

The new routes will come into effect this summer.

Nicola McCabe, head of customer services, said: "In the first few weeks of the summer season alone, we have already seen a surge in the number of passengers travelling aboard and it is most definitely an encouraging sign for the year ahead.

"Passenger volumes this summer are expected to grow by 8%, as a result of 15 new routes being launched and increased frequency on existing routes."
